Maximum City: iCity’s Youth Outreach Summer Programs

Event 1: July 2016

The focus of Maximum City’s youth outreach work in 2016-2017 was to share teaching and learning resources developed with iCity team members in the summer of 2016. The resulting curriculum, called the Bloor Street Design Challenge, was shared and implemented in four high schools along the Bloor Street Corridor, reaching over two hundred students and training 12 teachers and administrators. The resource will continue to be used in school programs in Geography, Design, and World Issues classes on an ongoing basis.

Event 2: July 2017

In the summer of 2017, iCity researchers worked with Maximum City staff to assist in the development of the YouthScore, an engagement tool and metric to assess the youth friendliness of streets, neighbourhoods, and places. Groups of youth determined weights and variables for criteria and indicators that they determined were important, then an onsite survey tool was created with the help of partners Esri Canada. Maximum City staff then used the YouthScore survey in its summer camps and shared it with  schools in the 2017-2018 school year.

Maximum City staff presented their work at the OAGEE 2017 education conference in Aurora and received many expressions of interest from teachers in their network. They also published this blog post at Spacing with iCity Project Manager Dr. Judy Farvolden: http://spacing.ca/toronto/2018/05/30/creating-child-friendly-cities/

Event 3: July 2018

In the summer of 2018, Maximum City worked with iCity partner Esri Canada and local youths to refine and expand the YouthScore survey tool into a child-friendly cities assessment tool. This tool was then adopted for a pilot project with the City of Toronto Children's Services:  https://maximumcity.ca/kidscorepilot

Event 4: July 2019

In the summer of 2019, iCity researchers joined with Maximum City to host a complete streets animation workshop.
